From 1891 all Chinese items imported into the US were required to be marked with "CHINA".
(see McKinley Tarrif Act and U.S. Stamp Act 1891). By 1919, this requirement was generally
replaced with "Made in China". While this requirement doesn't seem to have applied much to
snuff bottles, apparently some exporters/importers felt the need to "scratch China on the bottom
as I have seen this on the bottom of a few bottles probably from that period.
