Dong Kun was born in 1940 in Jinxian County, Hebei Province and died in the late 1990's. His art name is Yu Zhai. His father was a member of the Art and Calligraphy society of Hebei province. With this influence, Dong Kun developed a strong interest in the arts and performed with the Ping Ju opera troupe for many years. In 1973 a leg injury ended his acting career and he began inside painting study under Wang Xisan often accompanied by his son, Dong Xue. In 1977 Dong Kun, Chen Renpu, Zhang Rucai, Duo Chengyun, Liu Heping, Wang Beichuan, Wang Guanyu, Liu Ziyi, Wang Qian, Liu Tieqin, Suo Zhenhai, and Liu Shuamgqing were transferred to the Special Arts and Crafts Factory of Hengshui City where, along with these other notables of modern inside painting, his works began to receive world renoun.
