Portrait of Deng Xiaoping
Deng was born on July 12, 1904 in Baifang Village, southwest of Sichuan province. After Mao had died,
Deng came to own his authority through his popularity. By making himself popular abroad, Deng made
himself more popular at his home country. The perception grew that he had put China on the map internationally
and brought it renown through his economic reforms. He was also admired for having made the progress
in the cause of national reunification (Evans 246-47).
