Zheng Xuye was born in Bejing in 1951. Not long before her 20th birthday she entered the Bejing Arts and Crafts Factory and shortly was assigned to the inside painting studio to learn inside painting from Ding Guiling. At this time there were only five other persons at the studio; Ye Bengqi, Ye Shuying, Liu Shouben, Ding Guiling and Zhang Yuhua. What a selective group! Ye Bengqi, the last of the sons of Yeh Zhong San; Ye Shuying, the granddaughter ot Yeh Zhong San and perhaps the first female inside painter (Stevens p254); Liu Shouben and Ding Guiling; two of the original three students (all except Wang Xisan) who were trained by the Ye family and are generaly credited as the originators of the Modern Period of inside painting. The time of her entry into this field also concides with the return to inside painting after the Cultural Revolution and about the time Zhou Enlai allowed artist to return from the countryside to their studios. Zheng's work is strongly influenced by the work and style of Yeh Zhong San and Liu Shouben Information Leung's "A New Look of Chinese Inside Painted Snuff Bottles" and Steven's "The Collector's Book of Snuff Bottles" |
